Vision, Mission, Values are the DNA of your business.
Creating a business involves thousands of details so that when you reference a particular one, it’s important to understand where that lives in your architecture and design.
Here is the thing about Vision, Mission, Values:
Vision gives a long term context which is important to stay on a consistent trajectory. Investors want to know that you have a clear North on your compass heading.
Mission has a shorter term orientation and is the “how” to the “what” that the vision offers. Having a mission orientation is super important for the early stage investors because they are going to fuel that mission. They want to know how you will deploy their investment and what it will accomplish.
Values are critical to create culture and directions and help to lead the team.
They also create a frame and context from which you answer investor questions.
Here are the steps to create your vision statement:
- Project 5 to 10 years in the future
- Dream big and focus on success
- Use the present tense
- Use clear, concise, jargon-free language
- Infuse it with passion and make it inspiring
- Align it with your business values and goals
- Create a plan to communicate your vision statement to your employees
- Prepare to commit time and resources to the vision you establish
There are many schools of thought on how to go about creating the perfect mission statement, but there are some clear points to consider:
- Keep it short and concise.
- Avoid writing an essay.
- Think long-term.
- Avoid making it too limiting.
- Find out what your employees think of the mission statement.
- Feel free to change it.
